720p

When it comes time to make a final choice on whether to select a 720p or 1080p HD TV, the right HD TV will depend on your budget and how much space you will reserve for your HD TV. Making the decision over which HD resolution will be ideal for your personal viewing can be determined by evaluating what your specific needs are and how the two main HD TV resolutions actually play out.

The 1080p HD resolution found on HD TVs is equal to 1920 by 1080 pixels, which is also referred to as full high-definition. In other words, this resolution is the top HD resolution around on HD TVs capable of displaying every pixel of the HD broadcasts and content. 720p, on the other hand, is equal to 1366 by 768, 1280 by 720 or 1024 by 768. Although 720p is available in these three screen resolutions, it is often simply referred to as 720p or HD ready.

When it comes to HD broadcasting, most broadcasters do not use the 1080p HD resolution. Instead, they use the 1080i resolution, because it is easier to implement and uses less bandwidth than 1080p. For the HD viewer, this does not mean that image quality will be degraded in any way when displayed on a 1080p. 1080i uses 1920 by 1080 resolution, identical to that of 1080p, although it uses a different image scanning resolution to display HD content. 720p is also used by several major broadcasters and can sometimes produce a vivid image that is close to that of 1080i because it uses progressive scanning, which is widely supported on many HD TVs. The key to enjoying HD content is to get the content right from its source. That means that when the HD player has the right connections and HD resolution, the HD TV will display the content correctly. Although much emphasis is placed on the HD TV, the key to a high quality image is really the content playback source.

If deciding between the 720p and 1080p HD TV, remember that most HD TVs today natively support the 1080p resolution, and HDTV televisions that are labeled HD ready natively support the 720p resolution.
